Remembering History

REMEMBERING HISTORY

Introduction: Reality 1

Im gonna start from where I remember, that place in my life that was a part of making me who I am.
Im not saying this will be in order some things are a fog as for times and the age I was, some things will make you laugh and some things I’m sure will make you shed a tear or two. But maybe its just a way to remember and honor all the people that touched my life, some good and some not so good but each one I believe had a purpose in Gods sceme of things.
chapter 1:
The Beginning

I was Born July 13, 1958 . Rebecca Sue Brunskill, daughter of James Edward Brunskill and Sandra Jean ( jessip) Brunskill. I was born at Mount Carmel Medical Center in Pittsburg, Kansas. I was first born of 4 biological children. After me was my brother James Victor, then Theresa Jean and last but not least Melissa Anne.

Dads family consisted of : Grandma Catherine, Grandpa Harvey ( who by the time I came along had divorced.). And Venus Grandpa’s second wife also known as (George). Dad had 2 half brothers Jr. Brunskill , grandpa’s son by a previous marriage, Dad born to Harvey and Catherine, and my uncle Donald Engle, grandma’s son from previous marriage.

Another part of my was of Grandpa Loss, I don’t remember a lot except I was young when I first seen Him. He lived on chestnut in a house he built, still there but aged. He was aunt grace’s and grandma Brunskills dad. I remembering grace living there taking care of Him. He used to have a bed on the back porch, during the summer this was his room ….it was nothing fancy just a old screened in back porch with a cot for a bed, and a dresser and a few pics on the wall along with a old calender, but none the less it was His room where I had a few short visits when we were there.
Sometimes we set outside on the steps and cleaned walnuts from an old coal bucket that sit on the porch, full from the walnuts the grace had gathered from the yard to be cleaned. We’d sit with a brick and crack the walnuts and grandpa would take his nut pick and cleaned the nuts into a bowl, then the bucket was returned to the porch to be filled again later that day for the next batch. .I remember grandpa giving us the OLD car that sit in the garage because he didn’t drive anymore that was back in the early 60’s. As we grew up thoughts of grandpa seemed like a dream, not sure when he died just remembering him being gone and now uncle donald lived with grace and the back porch had been redone and become his room now a part of the house.
I used to go with grandma sometimes when she’d go stay with grace on the weekend and stay also. During the day grace would listen to records or the radio she had the song the unicorn and there was another song but it funny I cant remember it, im sure one day it will all come back to me . J

When I wasn’t in school I spent a lot of time with Grandma Brunskill. She lived across the street and around the corner from us. We spent time going to town 5 blocks away and stopping for lunch at the local drug stores snack bar, making a scrape book, watching TV and spent hours sitting on the porch swing watching and visiting with the neighbors , grandma lived right across the street from westside school so there was a block full of neighbor kids that usually gathered on the playground for a game of ball or to skate or whatever suited them at the time.

On weekends I sometimes went to Grace’s house………….. she was grandma’s sister, Dads aunt and my great aunt , but we always called her Aunt Grace (Loss).Grandma had a room there and usually spent the weekends just to cure the bordom. Grace had a lot of friends that were kinda peculiar. But to know her you had to love her. She had the wildest cloths any one could imagine . Colors most people wont get caught wearing looked like they were made for her.
Then there were her friends
There was Emma,:~~ she was sweet but a little strange always hugging the stuffins outta ya and then she’d pull out her coin purse which was clear plastic and always full of quarters. She came to spend the afternoon and play cards the reason for the quarters, plus each of us kids got one because we were so loveable ………………..LOL J J
Stephina: ~~ was another that would come about once a month of a evening for a visit, but never had a lot to say, But the major visitor to my aunts was Tony……. He was my aunts Bo. J He’d take her dancing, to dinner, and just out . My aunt was one in a million , lets just say she was younger than her years, loved christmas expecially for the kids, she was the biggest one around. She never married but took care of her family , She took care of grandpa Loss her dad in his later years, don’t remember him a lot but I do remember spending some time with him. Then in later years her nephew ……my uncle donald Engle…….. dads half brother moved in with her, he never married but I have just found out that he was pretty well know in His time, but more about that later.

Mom’s family consisted of Grandpa Harold and Grandma Issabel ( Issy as grandpa called her or Mary as she was known by others.) I remember two great grandmothers as I was young that lived with Grandma and grandpa…………..Great grandma Fowler grandpas mom and great grandma Hopple ..grandmas mom. Grandma Hopple was the grandma with the eye patch. There was also a brother of Grandmas that lived with them. I will never forget Jacob, the gentle soul that lived in the garage we used to spend hours talking to as he would sit and watch the kids play from his make shift room, You see Jacob was an alcoholic so he kept to himself to save hard feelings. I remember Grandma Suzy one of grandmas sisters who lived in Atchison, KS . Actually she would have been a great aunt to me, She was the mother of Aunt Sue.
Mom was one of seven kids in the Jessip family …4 boys Lyle, Perry, Jerry, and Michael….and 3 girls …Sandra (mom) Sylvia, and Donna.

As I write this the Brunskill Family has grown from a family of 6 to a family of 9. …The year is now 2004 and I have 3 more sisters as of 1987. Dee , Stacy and Kimberly the youngest who’s now 17 yrs of age.

Looking back I did have some happy time in my life and like a lot of others sad times too. I did have the Love of 3 men in my life. First Doug Walker, first actual love in my life till it went sour, I have many memories and regrets but life goes on. Then there was Brad, my hubby as short as it was. He was a man after my own heart and he had it, but again wasn’t ment to be. Truly my love and light in my eyes., then Bruce VanBuskirk, the one that got away ……darn L
Moved back home to Pittsburg, life still a roller coaster just different now 18 yrs later. My life has changed and is still changing . But now I have a new out look a new lease as some say………….. Guess this is where I need to start.
